Experts recommend that fish should be part of any diet and should be consumed at least twice a week. Canned fish is a simple and fast to prepare and a healthy meal, at the same time.
Canned fish is a rich source of proteins, unsaturated fat free, as well as Vitamin B12 and D. Eating canned fish is a practical way to add vitamins and minerals to a diet. Fatty fishes, like sardine and mackerel, are natural sources of vitamin D, allowing our body to absorb calcium. Canned sardines, for example, contain up to 10 times more calcium than fresh or frozen sardines.
Omega 3 is essential for our organism. Cold water fishes, specially sardines, are rich in Omega 3. Regular consumption of these foods can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
The recommended fatty fish consumption, such as sardines or mackerel is 400g per week. That gives about 3 to 4 cans every week.
Recently A Poveira created another brand Cego do Maio, attractive cans with modern design. The same classic flavours in new recipes, honoring the heroic Póvoa do Varzim fisherman who saved so many lives in this disctrit.

Portuguese canned fish is definitely worth a try. It goes beyond just being a quick and easy food to something that is not only very healthy but can make a great snack. However, choose high-quality brands when buying canned fish. The difference in flavor makes it worthwhile and it allows you a bit of lenience when you can’t find fresh fish on hand. You may pay a bit more, but it will be a real treat to be able to quickly whip up some appetizer plates of sardines and cavala or octopus with some fresh bread and crackers for your next summer party. Pair them with some good Portuguese and/or Spanish wine to maximize your experience. And if you’re not convinced, come and taste them first at one of the canned fish bars and restaurants when you’re in Lisbon or Porto, then you’ll know exactly what what to buy afterwards.by Catavino.net
