History
Azores comes from the word "hawk" (in Portuguese, "Açor"), the birds inhabiting the islands of the archipelago when the first navigators of Portuguese origin encountered huge flocks of these birds.
Located 1300 km from Portugal mainland, the Azores are, altogether, nine islands divided into groups: Santa Maria and São Miguel, on the east, Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial, on the center and finally, on the west, Flores and Corvo.
Discovered by the Portuguese between 1427 and 1452, the population of the Azores served strategically a naval base and there was only cultivated wheat to supply the metropolis.
The mild climate, combined with the volcanic landscape, mountains and rich flora, made the Azores a quiet and charming destination, which attracted more and more tourists over time.
São Miguel, also known as "Green Island" is the island of the Azores with higher population density. It has an area of about 800 km2 and a population of around 140,000 inhabitants, 35% of them living in Ponta Delgada, the capital.
Being the most complex and diverse island of the archipelago, the richness of mountains and valleys along with different types of human occupation justify São Miguel's several attractions ranging from beautiful ponds, wells, spas and beaches, the hills, mountains and green plains; All this landscape is surrounded by a blue ocean, the Atlantic.
The rich heritage offers a visit to the past, with churches and colonial houses, the island is also known for Parque Terra Nostra, its wonderful golf courses, the majestic scenery that can be seen from almost any location and the hospitality of its inhabitants .
The primary sector is the main economic activity of São Miguel, with emphasis on dairy products, cereals, tea and fruit.
