The sweet wines of late harvest and by “mutage” obtain beautiful Gold Medals. Diversity of Sensorial Expression Each of the wines that distinguished themselves at Muscats du Monde® did so because of their own intrinsic quality, not in comparison with the other wines. This event is therefore a unique opportunity to bring together and discover a wide variety of Muscats wines in all their forms: dry, sweet, still, sparkling, with and with pink to dark red shades. According to the expert judges, this extraordinarily rich group of wines demonstrated a level of sensory complexity rarely encountered with other wines.

The two main types that are grown in Portugal are known locally as Moscatel Galego Branco DOC (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains) in Douro and “Moscatel de Setúbal” (Muscat of Alexandria).

Setúbal demarked region covers mostly Moscatel fortified wines caste-based (Muscat of Alexandria, as it is known) known as the most aromatic grape in the world, makes fortified wine with a very intense aroma of the orange blossom, mellow and full flavoured, which evolves with age for notes of nuts, raisins and coffee.

Or, in the case of “Moscatel Roxo”, that has a delimited production, a variety more like “Moscatel Galego Branco Douro” in sophistication, a grape that began life as a natural genetic mutation of Moscatel Galego, but in colour presents an exotic pink as opposed to yellowish-green of Douro Moscatél. It makes fortified wines more elegant with a very complex aromas and flavours of a balanced bitter orange and tangerine peel, apricots, turning nuttier, figgier and raisiny the longer they remain in wooden vats with normally 20 years.
Fortified wines made from Moscatel Galego Roxo are sweeter and very aromatic with a long after-taste.
Occasional Moscatel wines are bottled as ‘Colheita’ labeling the year, with a vintage named on the bottle.

Regarding Moscatel, only a tiny proportion are sold with 10, 20 or more years of aging in wood.

Choosing this wine you will obtain a Setúbal Moscatel Roxo Rosé, awarded with a tasting note of 17-18/20 ou 93-95/100.

History

Moscatel is one of the oldest and most famous fortified wines in the world.
In Portugal there are records of its existence since the thirteenth century but its origin is much earlier.
This eastern Mediterranean grape was introduced in the Iberian Peninsula by the Romans.

Two regions of Portugal are famous for fortified Moscatel: The Douro Moscatel and the PGI Peninsula de Setúbal (Setúbal and Palmela DOC) as Moscatel de Setúbal.

Setúbal and Palmela, is one of the country's oldest demarked region, founded in 1908.

Setúbal and Douro Moscatel wines compose the Portuguese set of famous and well renowned unique fortified wines in the world: Port Wine, Madeira, Carcavelos, Colares and Pico (Azores).
A truly great and unique preserved treasure.

Setúbal Moscatel wine is matured for a minimum period of approximately two years, with or without indication of harvest date or age on the label.
There is also the designation of "Moscatel Superior", labelled in wines aged in a minimum of five years that have obtained a rating of outstanding quality in chamber's tasters.
