José I, king of Portugal as an offer tfor he court of Beijing in 1752, by order of the Count of Oeiras, The Marquis of Pombal, such was the importance of this liqueur wine at the time. The total production in the region peaked at 3,000 kites in the early nineteenth century. However the designation of fortified wine come later with king D. Carlos, in 1908.
The Carcavelos wine earned along Portuguese illustrious accolades and others from around the world, such as the Duke of Wellington, during his stay in Portugal commanding Portuguese-British military forces in defense against the Napoleonic army in the early nineteenth century. British troops took with them the name and fame of Carcavelos wine, making the UK one of the largest known international markets.
Due to the real estate growth in Oeiras and Estoril municipalities, this Carcavelos generous wine was recently almost extinct. As a result of several efforts in recent years, the production of the Carcavelos is now a reality again!
The Quinta dos Pesos decided to ensure the continuity of this precious wine and replanted a vineyard with the traditional caste and with full dedication. The wine is aged in oak casks for the convenient stage of several years.
Thanks to its quality and characteristics, this wine has started its journey abroad.
The constant wine-producing pests, lack of state support for the recovery of the vineyard, the discouragement of producers, and the massive urbanization of Carcavelos region, dictated the almost total extinction of the production of Carcavelos wine.
