The two main types of Moscatel grown in Portugal are known locally as “Moscatel de Setúbal” (Muscat of Alexandria) and Moscatel Galego Branco (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains), the type found in Douro a variety recognised worldwide as the most elegantly scented in the family, although elegance depends also upon vineyard location, vine management, and where and how the wine is made.
Douro Moscatel wisely worked is capable of making particularly interesting, complex sweet, fortified Moscatel wines.

Douro Moscatel vineyards can be found in a certain extent all over the Douro demarcated region, but particularly around the cities of Alijó and Favaios and at the northern end of the central heart of the Douro, Cima Corgo region, on a high undulating terrace vineyards.
Most of the Moscatel wine in general is sold with 2 to 5 years old, while some Moscatel from Douro and some Moscatel Roxo (Setúbal) are sold with 10 to 20 years.

Occasional wines are bottled as ‘Colheita’ labeling the year, with a vintage named on the bottle.

Choosing this wine you will obtain a Moscatel awarded wine with a tasting note of 16,5-17/20 or 91-93/100.

History

Moscatel or Muscat is one of the oldest and most famous fortified wines in the world. An eastern Mediterranean grape that was introduced in the Iberian Peninsula by the Romans. Its distinctive aroma is really easy to recognise.
Moscatel de Favaios in Douro resurfaced in the 50s, a region that was an ancient Roman settlement and kept a corrupted form of the historical founder's name of this town, "Flavius".
