History
Poveira is from "Póvoa do Varzim" an ancient city on the northern coast of Portugal as well as an important fish market that in the 18th century supplied even the inland provinces of the country.
This heritage is so strong that its inhabitants known as "poveiros" have always been recognized as expert sailors, fishermen and shipbuilders and were often recruited to work at the shipyards of "Ribeira das Naus" in Lisbon or as pilots or seamen in Portuguese ships.
With the decline of the shipyards due to siltation of the national coast in the 19th century, the "poveiros" turned their activities mainly to fishing and the building of fishing vessels, which started the canned fish industry that gave it an impetus and presence that extends to this day well beyond the fishing and canning industry, with hotels and casinos by the seashore accounting for its population, doubling during the summer months.
Located in the historic centre of Póvoa de Varzim since 1938, the cannery “A Poveira” is currently one of the oldest industries in this sector.
There are many patrimonial traces of this strong maritime activity heritage in this city, with a great and singular tribute to the “poveira” women, a major figure in this community.
