Origin

Vouzela is a Viseu district. The name itself represents two nearby rivers, Vouga - the main river of the region and Zela, Vouzela's riverside. Zela route is one of the six environmental interpretation routes. This route is part of the Vouga rails (Trilhos do Vouga) and Mountain Rivers, created under the WATERWAYSNET project, part of the environmental heritage of the Vouga basin.

The origin of Vouzela pastries are unknown they are however very similar to Tentúgal pastries, some say even better, since there is no accounting for personal preferences, both are highly recommended.

History

Portuguese "conventual sweets" have strong cultural, economic, historical and religious roots dating back to the 16th century, when sugar was called “Europe’s white gold” and coming into Portugal in abundance from sugar cane plantations in Brazil and in the Madeira island.

This is at the very root of the “sugar culture” practiced in monasteries and convents where nuns and monks would devote a lot of their time to the preparation of egg and sugar based confections.
