Porto Formoso tea plantation uses a completely organic production method, the first organic tea in the Azores and the only organic tea production in Europe.
An artisanal tea factory is located on the northern side of the island of São Miguel. Azorean tea is the only European tea for industrial purposes. The Volcanic soil of the island and its temperate climate contribute to a lush greenery pure and unique tea plant. São Miguel has in fact the ideal conditions for the development of the original Camellia Sinensis China tea plant.
The first crops in May are always celebrated in the traditional manner, preserving the original uses and customs, conveying an important socio-cultural phenomenon. The picking is done until September enjoying the time of reduced rainfall, resulting in slow leaf growth and a higher quality mountain tea. The picking methods, the regular quality control production, the infusion leaves process through natural procedures that are completely free of additives, give this tea a high quality scent and taste.
Obtained from the terminal bud or the first leaf of the plant therefhore containing more caffeine than mature leaves.

It is believed that the first seeds of tea were brought from Brazil to Azores in the second half of the eighteenth century. For a long time the tea was used only as an ornamental plant but in the year of 1878 and by the initiative of the Society Micaelense Agriculture Promoter arrived in San Miguel two Chinese tea experts to teach the industrial tea transformation. Tea interest begun to grow in the island to the point of the existence of six tea factories and other small producers as well.
